Player Type –  STX hammer u best defensive lacrosse head

The Hammer U is most certainly a high end defensive lacrosse head. But for us, this STX head is THE BEST DEFENSIVE LACROSSE HEAD.

This head is extremely highly reviewed, has been built for the defensive game better than any other head, and will seriously improve your performance as a defender.

This head is for serious players only! It’s quite the investment, and although I recommend this head with the highest regard, you need to be the type of player ready to make a commitment to investing in your gear.

Why You Should Get the STX Hammer U Defensive Lacrosse Head

  • C-Channel Technology –  This STX C-Channel Technology will received the stress evenly throughout the head. There becomes less overall impact along the bottom rail. That makes this head strong enough to match check after check and gather ground ball after ground ball.  Interested in checking out more on the C-Channel Tech? Check out the STX page dedicated to it.
  • STX Forward Cant Makes Your Pocket Sweeter – The forward cant slides the ball with greater ease into the ‘sweet spot’ in your pocket. This will greatly improve your speed of release, and accuracy.
  • Open Sidewall Design Keeps the Head Strong –  With an open sidewall design, you are getting extra flex on hard contact in checks and when you are meeting the ground, scooping balls.
  • Lots of Options to String Up this Head –  There are tons of stringing holes on the STX Hammer U. It’s always nice to have the option to feed your creative stringing side, right?
  • Three Sidewalls for More Stability – The three sidewalls on the STX Hammer will really add to it’s durability. There’s no question this head can stand up to the physical requirements of playing defense.
  • 4 Chambered Throat Design Makes the Head Stronger, and Lighter! – With the 4 Chambered Throat Design, STX added in strength, while making this head even lighter.
  • stx hammer u best defensive lacrosse head2 Screws Holes for Extra Head Security – With 2 extra screw holes, you won’t be hearing any rattle from the connection between your head and handle.
  • Repeat Buyers – Not only are the reviews for this head good, but in the reviews, tons of players have recorded buying this head for multiple sticks, again and again. That’s surely saying something.

Potential Drawbacks –

  • Drawbacks Were Hard to Come By – Sorry to do this to you, but I honestly could not dig up much dirt on the STX Hammer U. That’s why I have this ranked as our “Best Defensive Lacrosse Head.”

Here’s another good look at the STX Hammer U, via a video review from East Coast Dyes.

Overall Value – $100.00 off of Amazon.com

I cannot recommend this defensive lacrosse head enough. If you choose to make the investment in the STX Hammer U lacrosse head, you will surely not be disappointed.

This head will be able to do it all for you. You will be able to scoop ground balls, hand out plenty of poke checks, and play hours and hours without fear of wear.

This is the “Best Defensive Lacrosse Head” on the market right now, and you should get yourself.

Maverik Tank defensive lacrosse head

Warranty:

Head Warranty: via Maverik.com

Maverik Lacrosse warrants, to original customer only, that its’ Heads will be free from defects during normal use for six (6) months from the date of original retail purchase.

All warranty claims must meet the following criteria below in order to be returned:

  • Item was purchased from an authorized Maverik Lacrosse Dealer;
  • The customer retains proof of purchase from the original transaction;
  • The item has not been abused, altered, defaced, or otherwise negligently damaged;
  • The return was handled properly according to the Maverik return prMaverik Tank defensive lacrosse headocess listed below:

Player Type –

Who do you think the Maverik Tank was made for? It’s really an awesome name, isn’t it?

But all joking aside, the Maverik Tank is made for serious, elite level defenders. It comes at a bit of a higher end price, but should be well worth the investment.

Why You Should Get The Maverik Tank Defensive Lacrosse Head –

  • Flat Scoop, Ground Ball Vacuum – The scoop on the Maverik Tank was engineered perfectly for the ground ball scooping defenseman. The scoop will stay flat to the ground, making picking up balls as simple as possible.
  • Level 5 Bottom Rail, Great for Defensive Players –  This “Level 5 Bottom Rail” is a great update for defensive players. This means that the thickest point of the head is a little higher in the rail, this makes the pocket sit up a little bit higher, which is ultimately better for ground balls as the ball will fall in easier, and this will give you a little bit more whip which is important for playing with a long pole.
  • Durable, Made for Fierce Checks – The Maverik Tank was designed with physical, close D play in mind. The True Form Technology promises the head to keep its shape after consistent play, and this is HUGE for defenders like you, who want their head staying stiff as long as possible!
  • 4 Strut Design – The 4 Strut Design adds to the overall durability of the Maverik Tank head. This head is made that much tougher and stronger.
  • Extra Head Security – There were two extra screw holes added onto the throat of this head for extra head security, so you do not get any shaking between the head and the shaft.

Potential Drawbacks –

  • Not a Ton of Info a Little “Untested” – There was not all too much feedback on the Maverik Tank yet, but I expected that as it is so new. Besides that, it was hard to dig up anything negative about this head.

For another look at the Maverik Tank lacrosse head, check out this video via Maverik Lacrosse.

Overall Value – $90.00 off of Amazon.com

There is no doubt, the Maverik Tankis a top level defensive lacrosse head. I could of put is as our “Best Defensive Lacrosse Head,” but with the lacking overall feedback on it, I wanted to wait on that and see how you all performed with it.

If you are a serious defender, and you are ready to make a decent investment on your next head, I recommend the Maverik Tank as an awesome, perfect for close D, head.

STX Stallion Lacrosse Head

Specs –

Head Plane: STX Forward Cant

Stringing Holes: Lots of Stringing Options

Level of Play: Meets NCAA and NFHS Requirements

Colors Available: Carolina Blue, Forest Green, Kelly Green, Neon Green, Orange, Red, Royal, White, Black and Navy

STX Stallion lacrosse head

Warranty: via STX.com

STX lacrosse and field hockey equipment and certain other STX Items (excluding pockets, stringing, Mini-STX, accessories, promotional items (e.g. camp giveaways), finishes (e.g. chrome, paint), graphics and over-molding) are covered by the following “Limited Warranty”: STX will replace unusable or broken products (or provide a replacement with equal value) that break or become unusable under normal playing conditions due to poor workmanship and/or material failure within:

  • 60 days from the date of purchase of lacrosse heads (excluding chrome), handles (excluding AL6000 series) and goggles

Player Type – STX Stallion lacrosse head

This is another one of our “dynamic” heads on the list as the STX Stallion lacrosse head has become a well-known head amongst the middie crowd as well.

That being said, this head can be perfect for the more versatile defenseman, the player who must do their part in protecting their net but also starting the attack going the other way for their team.

No question, the STX Stallion is a high level head, and that makes it a bit of an investment. I recommend this head mostly for committed/serious lacrosse players who are comfortable making larger investments in their gear.

Why You Should Get theSTX Stallion Lacrosse Head

  • Open Sidewall Gives You the Flex You Need – With the open sidewall design, similar to the STX Hammer U, the head will give you the right amount of flex on ground balls and other high stress moments.
  • Get Creative with Your Pocket – With the amount of stringing holes on the Stallion, if you like getting a bit wild with your stringing patterns, you can go ahead and feed that urge.
  • Pocket Designed to Stay High – The design of the bottom rail will keep the pocket high. This is perfect for defenseman looking to scoop ground balls, but also keep a little whip.
  • Dueling Sidewalls for Stability – The dueling sidewalls keeps this head stable on all throws, passes and shots.
  • C-Channel Technology –  As mentioned earlier with the STX Hammer, the C-Channel Technology does wonders for the stress distribution with this head. Your head will be able to handle more stress, for a longer duration of time.
  • STX Forward Cant – Again, I seem to be repeating the features on the Hammer. The Forward Cant gives your head just the slightest tilt to it so the ball will find the ‘sweet spot’ of your pocket more often than not.
  • The Stallion is Perfect for Face-offs – The Stallion is a durable head, there is no question there. The head will give you the right amount of flex whenever you get into faceoff opportunities.
  • HUGE LIST OF REVIEWS – The STX Stallion lacrosse head sports quite the list of nearly 5 star reviews on lacrossemonkey.com. That haSTX Stallion lacrosse head s to be a point of assurance for you, it definitely was for me!

Potential Drawbacks –

  • Not Much to Speak Of – Again, like the STX Hammer U, the drawbacks were very hard to come by with this Stallion lacrosse head.
  • Be Aware of Your Playing Style – As this head has as well been known to be equipped for the middie position, you need to think about your playing style. Are you more of a traditional defender? Or are you more of a dynamic player yourself?

Overall Value – $85.00 off of Amazon.com

TheSTX Stallion is really an awesome head. Whether you choose to get this head for your D pole will have to come down to what sort of style of play you most exhibit.

If you are a true defender, through and through, this head may not be for you. However, if you play more of an adapted style of defense, where you are often times starting the attack for your team, then the Stallion could be the perfect model for you.

Brine Cyber X lacrosse heads

Warranty: via Brine.com

Brine stands behind all of its products when used under normal conditions. Proof of purchase with the date of the purchase on it, is required for every item being returned due to defects: Warranty

  • Lacrosse heads are guaranteed for 6 months from date of purchase.
  • Brine will replace all heads unstrung unless the head was purchased strung within the 1st 30 days. Please remove any stringing on the head before sending back the product.

Player Type – Brine Cyber X red lacrosse head

The Brine Cyber Xis an elite level head. Brine is always known for quality products, and I feel that the Cyber X stands up to that reputation. What’s possibly best about this head though, is that while it’s of high level calibur, the price won’t scare anybody away at about $80-90.

The Cyber X comes with a rather wide design to it, making it perfect for the defender who loves to get into the passing lanes. The stiffness added to this head design makes it great for face-offs and scooping ground balls.

As well, this head was designed for “dynamic” defenseman. It’s built fairly light, and designed for a high pocket which will allow you to make quick passes, and move the attack forward for your team.

Why You Should Get The Brine Cyber X Defensive Lacrosse Head

  • Wide Head Design, Great for Defending the Pass – The wider head on the Brine Cyber Xwill make you a real nuisance for the offense’s passing attack. With this wide head, you will easily be able to break up connections and be a pain for the other side.
  • Added Stiffness, Will Stand Up to Tough Play – The Cyber X was made a bit stiffer from previous models. The added cross beam construction in the sidewall makes the head a lot stronger all the way throughout.
  • Gradual SideWall Design, Built for Higher Pocket – The sidewall design to the Cyber X makes it perfect for a higher pocket. This will keep you on all the ground balls, but as well able to throw quick passes to advance your team’s attack.
  • Brine Cyber X lacrosse headDecent Lifespan – Of the reviews that I gathered, the Cyber X was lasting people mostly 2 seasons or so.

Potential Drawbacks –

  • Small Amount of Reviews – The Cyber X was not accompanied with a ton of reviews. The reviews I did find were good, but they were few. Always something for you to think about. The more reviews, the more quality information I can provide you with.

For another few looks at the Brine Cyber X lacrosse head, check out this video via the Lacrosse Network.

Overall Value – $90.00 off of Amazon.com

TheBrine Cyber X seems to be a really great head for the ‘attack ready’ defender and not for an extreme investment.

If you are looking for a high quality, mid-level priced defense head, the Cyber X should really be perfect for you. It’s built tough, wide to take up space, and lighter weight to keep your stick moves quick and high paced.

Player Type –

The Brine Edge X has not only been said to be a high quality defensive head, but as well has been used by some offensive players as well.

However, since we are talking about the the defensive side of things with this head today, I will say, this head is great for the defenders who make their living off of ground balls and enjoy a mid level pocket.

The Brine Edge X is a truly high quality head, but again, it carries a great price along with it, (about $70.00 right now).

Why You Should Get The Brine Edge X Defensive Lacrosse Head –

  • Good Price, for a Great Head – The Brine Edge X is a high level head (as mentioned above), but won’t break the bank for you.
  • Stands Up to Mother Nature – Some laxers who have used the Edge X before say that it works well in both cold and warm weather alike. You can feel comfortable throwing poke checks, despite chilly temps.
  • Made for Ground Balls – The Brine Edge X is a perfect head for someone who needs to be scooping ground balls all game. The Wide Head Design,
  • Lots of Reviews! Good for You! – The Brine Edge X came with a good collection of reviews. Not only were there a lot of the reviews, but they were of high praise as well.
  • Praised for Its Stiffness – This head will be able to stand up to checks without the fear of warp. Of all the laxers who reviewed the product, many of them said this head was tough.
  • You Will Catch More Balls – The wider head design to this Brine Edge X will help you catch with greater consistency.
  • Gain Some Control – Previous users have said the wide and flared sidewalls give you a greater sense of control with the ball during play.
  • Brinde edge x lacrosse headLong Lifespan –  The Brine Edge X should last a solid 2 years or so of consistent, close D play. Laxers who have used the Edge X before said they were really impressed with how much play they were able to get out of the Edge X without damage.

Potential Drawbacks –

  • Needs a little More Pinch – This can be a matter of personal preference, but a few laxers said this head could use a bit more pinch to it. Some players have pinched the head themselves and really enjoyed using it from there.

For another look at the Brine Edge X, check out this video review via East Coast Dyes.

Overall Value –  $70.00 off of Amazon.com

The Brine Edge X is a highly reviewed defensive lacrosse head, and if you are familiar with my work here at “OneStopLacrosse.com,” you surely know how important good customer reviews are to me in considering the value of a piece of gear.

With all that being said, the Brine Edge X has a killer price attached, and should more than ‘do the job’ for you all looking for your next defensive head.

STX Proton U Defensive Lacrosse Head

Specs –

Head Width: Very Wide, No Pinch

Stringing Holes: Additional Stringing Holes from Previous Models

Special Features: STX Forward Cant,

Weight: 5.2 Oz.

Level of Play: Meets NCAA and NFHS Requirements

STX proton U defensive lacrosse head

Player Type –

This head is made for the hard, physical play defender. TheSTX Proton U head is extremely stiff on that spectrum and wide too. If you are a defender who at all likes some pinch, at first this head may not seem right for you, but if you so desire you can always pinch it.

This is a high quality STX head and it comes at a super cheap price. If you are a defender not ready to make a huge investment on your next head, this STX could be perfect for you.

Why You Should Get The STX Proton U Defensive Lacrosse Head

  • Awesome Price – The STX Proton U lacrosse head can be found for about $50.00 dollars right now, that’s an insane deal for a high level lacrosse head. I would take that into consideration in deciding which head is right for you.
  • Rounded, Stiff Scoop, Great for Ground Balls – The scoop on this head is nice and round and very stiff. This will be perfect for you if you are a defender who needs to be able to scoop ground balls all game.
  • Stiff and Durable Head – This head will be able to stand up to poke checks and ground balls without much wear for a season at least (see below).
  • Easy to String, Enough Holes for the Defenseman –  This lacrosse head does not come with a whole mess of stringing holes, but for the uses of a defender and what sort of pocket you might like playing in the back, the stringing options have been perfect for players in the past.
  • Wide Design, Great for Catching – The STX Proton U is an extremely wide head, this makes catching a real breeze.

Potential Drawbacks –

  • 1-2 Season Head – For the most part, I would not expect your STX Proton U to get more than a full season of use. You may expect this with the price, but the Proton may warp or crack after some close D play over a full season.

Check out this Customer Product Review video of the STX Proton U, via SportStop.com

Overall Value – $50.00 off of Amazon.com

The STX Proton U is coming in with a sick deal right now. It’s hard to pass up a quality head that’s priced at $50.00.

This head could last more than one season, but again I would not expect it to last anything more than two. For the time that you will use it, this head should be nice and stiff, wide for catching and scooping ground balls, and overall, just be a solid defensive head for you.

Brine Triumph X lacrosse heads

Warranty: via Brine.com

Brine stands behind all of its products when used under normal conditions. Proof of purchase with the date of the purchase on it, is required for every item being returned due to defects: Warranty

  • Lacrosse heads are guaranteed for 6 months from date of purchase.
  • Brine will replace all heads unstrung unless the head was purchased strung within the 1st 30 days. Please remove any stringing on the head before sending back the product.

Player Type –

The Brine Triumph X is one of our most expensive heads on the list, so the investment on this baby becomes a bit more serious. That being said, I’d recommend this head mostly for committed, serious laxers, who are confident about making larger investments in their gear.

This head is built very tough, and would be perfect for you if you are the defender throwing lots of poke checks, scooping ground balls, and blocking passes.

Why You Should Get This Brine Triumph X Defensive Lacrosse Head – Brine triumph X lacrosse head

  • Built Very Tough, for the Tough Defender – This head was designed for toughness and durability. It’s Core-Tech Sidewall makes this head very strong and stiff, and should have little concern with warping or cracking during close D play.
  • Flat Scoop, Perfect for Ground Balls – The scoop on the Brine Triumph will help you get as close to the field on your ground balls as possible. You will be able to scoop more GBs with this head.
  • Wide Face, Great for Catching and GBs – With the wide face (like most of these defensive heads) you should find catching and scooping GBs made a little bit easier.

Potential Drawbacks –

  • Not a Lot of Info on the Head – TheBrine Triumph Xis a fairly new head, and with that being said, there is not a whole lot of customer feedback. This is always a matter of personal preference, as to how much the feedback of previous laxers means to you.
  • Steeper Investment – The price on the Brine Triumph X takes a jump up from a lot of the other heads we are listing here. That being said, you need to be a lot more confident in considering this head

For another good look at the Brine Triumph X, check out a good video via Throne of String.

Overall Value –  $100.00 off of Amazon.com

I am really confident this Brine Triumph X is a great defensive lacrosse head. However, there is not a ton of customer feedback, so the waters are a bit untested.

If you have confidence in Brine as a brand, and have received enough information here to make a purchase, more power to you, I do not see anyone being dissatisfied with this head.

Just be cautious and sure, this head is an investment that should be made more so by highly committed, serious lacrosse players.

Warrior Evo Lacrosse Head

Special Features: SYMRAIL Design

Weight: 4.6 Oz. (Lightweight Head)

Level of Play: Meets NCAA and NFHS Requirements

Warrior Evo 4x lacrosse head colors

Warranty: via Warrior.com

Warrior stands behind its heads and handles under stress of normal use for six months from the original date of purchase.

  • Warrior will replace all heads unstrung unless the head was purchased strung within the 1st 30 days. Please remove any stringing on the head before sending back the product.
  • Proof of purchase is required for each return. Proof of purchase can be a receipt, cancelled check, credit card or bank statement, or anything else that clearly indicates the date of purchase. In addition, the purchase must be made through an authorized Warrior dealer.
  • Warrior Sports will replace the product with the exact product that is defective. If the product is no longer available, we will replace with a different color or upgrade you free of charge if we no longer carry that item.

Player Type –  Warrior evo 4x lacrosse head

This Warrior Evo 4x head is interesting in that it has been seen to be pretty dynamic and is used by both defensive and offensive players alike.

That being said, if you are a defender checking out this head, then consider that this head is meant for someone as well needing to contribute on the attack side of the field. If you are a defender who will often times start the attack for your time, this Warrior model may work out really well for you.

Why You Should Get The Warrior Evo Defensive Lacrosse Head –

  • Great Balance of Lightness and Stiffness – The Warrior Evo was built to be a bit lighter weight defensive head, and Warrior definitely achieved that as it comes in at 4.6 Oz. (unstrung). However, the head is still really stiff, and durable, so the lightness of the head does not take away from the durability.
  • SYMRAIL Design –  The Weight to Strength ratio on this head is product of the SYMRAIL Design. What this means is that the interior sidewall mirrors the outer sidewall for the cut in weight, without losing any of the toughness to the head.
  • Stringing Options – This head comes with 18 stringing holes, that gives you tons of options for getting creative with your pocket and making it exactly how you would like. This may be the most talked about feature with this Warrior Evo 4x.
  • Warrior Evo 4x lacrosse headGolden for Ground Balls – The wide head design on the Warrior Evo 4X and the extremely stiff build makes this head awesome for gathering ground balls during play.

Potential Drawbacks –

  • Pay Attention to Your Play Type – More so than the other listed heads here, this head can be used both for the attacking player and the defensive player. That is really important to keep in mind, if you are a true defender, making very few moves, if any, towards the attacking end, you might want to check out another head.
  • Minimal Info – For this head, there was not as much feedback as I would have liked to get. Although I feel confident this head is of good quality, it’s always reassuring to have more player input.

For another look at the Warrior Evo 4x, here’s a good video review on YouTube

Overall Value – $80.00 off of Amazon.com

TheWarrior Evo 4X is a high level head, and meets the price bracket for higher end heads as well. Lots of players have been fans of the Evo series in the past, it was just a bit difficult to find quality information on the Evo 4X as of now.

Although I do still recommend this head (I would not of listed it on our “Best Defensive Lacrosse Heads” list), the lacking player feedback is something to be noted.

What I really love about this head is the opportunity for pocket customization. There are tons of stringing holes, and you will definitely be able to get creative with how you make your pocket.

The Best Defensive Lacrosse Head for Your Dollar:

This head may be the best deal!

Xcalibur lacrosse heads

Player Type –

This head is perfect for the young, developing defenseman. It’s a great deal (a really small investment), and should still ‘do the job.’

If you know anything about the X10 Head, the Xcalibur head is said to be a pinched down version of the X10, specifically focused at players who want their head to provide for greater ball control.

Keep in mind, it is NFHS and youth play legal, ONLY.

Why You Should Get This STX Xcalibur Defensive Lacrosse Head –

  • You Are a Younger Player, Looking to Make an Inexpensive Investment – Although the small price tag, this head still seems to have gotten the job done for tons of previous lacrosse defenders before. If you are not ready to make a huge investment on your next head, there’s no better option than right here.
  • You Will Get a Full Season From This Head – The trestle sidewall on the Xcalibur gives it some extra stiffness and durability to stand up to tough checks. Laxers who have used it before said they were able to get a solid season of everyday play out of it.
  • Wide Head, makes for easy catching – Although slightly pinched (in comparison to the X10 (link up), the XCalibur is still a wide head when its all said and done. This makes it great for a player who wants to focus in on their catching ability.
  • Great Scoop – The added stiffness to the head makes this one great for gathering ground balls. STX designed this head with a great scooping ability in mind.
  • THE PRICE – This must be said again, these heads are coming in around $30.00 right now! Don’t let the low price keep you from thinking it’s of high quality

Potential Drawbacks –  STX Xcalibur lacrosse head

  • Potential Warp – Some laxers who have used the Xcalibur before said they came across some warp from extended use with this head. While this typically happens with all heads, it might happen a bit quicker with the Xcalibur.
  • Lifespan – If you are looking for a head to get multiple seasons out of, this may not be the right one for you. You may have to look to make a greater investment, as this head has been noted to last for sure, about one full season.
  • Small Collection of Reviews – Although the reviews were for the most part, of really high praise, the overall amount was lower than other heads on this list.

For another look at the STX Xcalibur lacrosse head, check out this product video, via Lacrosse.com
